Temazcal for couples (“the house of hot stones”) is a type of sweat lodge that originated with pre-Hispanic Indigenous peoples in Mesoamerica. The indigenous people used it for bathing, healing the sick, or for rituals, among other things. Temazcal was a place to give birth. A round-shaped construction represents the mother’s womb.
The “Temazcalero” arrives hours before to light the fire, clear energetically all areas, build an altar and heat the Temazcal with volcanic rocks or “Grandmothers”.
The “Grandmothers” or volcanic rocks come from sacred places like Mexican volcanoes. They carry the knowledge that you need to heal.
The person who leads the Temazcal (Temazcalero) is an experienced healer or shaman, guiding the ceremony and holding the space.
When participants arrive, they gather around the sacred fire where the “Grandmothers” are warming up. The ceremony starts with an introductory talk, ancient wisdom, a prayer, and everyone’s intentions will be planted in the fire.
You will be cleansed with copal and herbs to purify the energies at the door before entering the Temazcal.
Once inside, the ritual begins. The “Temazcalero” will guide you through the four doors. The “Greeting at 4 Rumbos” represents the four elements (air, fire, water, and earth) with specific energy, direction, and intention. These four doors are accompanied by songs, prayers, instruments, herbs, water to generate steam, copal … The steam purges the physical body and cleanses the energetic bodies for a new rebirth. These elements help create an environment to let go of everything that is not needed, overcome fears, and be reborn with a fresh, clear mind. The door of the Temazcal only opens in each symbolic entry to receive the “Grandmothers”. It is important not to abandon the Temazcal as do you not interfere with the healing process. The experience inside will last between 1 hour and 1 hour and a half.
When the ritual finishes, in an orderly manner, carefully and in silence, you will leave the Temazcal. You will take a cold bath or shower or swim in the sea outside. The ceremony will close and sit down altogether in the fire area.
